The Liberian government and the national utility, Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), are seeking consultants for a 15 megawatt solar power project with a 10 megawatt-hour battery storage system.
Both facilities will connect to the Schieffelin substation on the Ella L. Towon Highway, linking Monrovia and Roberts International Airport.
The solar project aims to provide a swift and adaptable solution by concurrently building the soalr plant and the battery storage system. This approach will offer reliable, clean, and cost-effective power supply. The plant will operate under a flexible leasing agreement for an initial five years.
Shouldit come to fruition, this solar facility would mark Liberia's first major photovoltaic power station. Despite this, Liberia's solar progress has been modest; by the end of 2022, the country had only installed 3 megawatts of solar capacity.
Liberia's first attempt at solar installation dates back to 2017 when it partnered with Energiya Global, an Israeli company, to secure funding for a 10 megawatt solar plant at Roberts International Airport.
