Amsterdam: doubling the number of solar panels, citizens move towards renewable energies

Amsterdam currently has more than 120,000 households with more than 1 million solar panels installed, totalling about 250 MW of capacity. The city has more than doubled the number of solar modules deployed in the city in 2.5 years, the city hall said.

In a statement, the city said, "We want all suitable buildings to be able to deploy solar by 2040." That means about 500,000 homes could be powered by solar. We regularly organise buying events for homeowners to make it easier and cheaper to install solar panels."

Authorities began promoting rooftop PV in 2013. At that time, only 9 MW of PV systems were integrated into the city's grid, and the government announced plans to install an additional 150 MW by 2020.

Since then, various measures have been taken to simplify the installation process for residential and commercial PV systems. In addition, a series of incentives have been introduced to encourage the adoption of solar energy by individuals, businesses, communities and solar cooperatives.
